I went to the match quite by accident – together with my teammates from the ŁKS cadet basketball team, I was at a training camp in nearby Dojlidy at the time. And despite the fact that it was the second tier competition, we decided to see how the Włókniarz Pabianice team was doing – a club that, in the 1980s, was much better known for its women’s basketball team.
About 11,000 people turned up in the stands of the old stadium, and Jagiellonia won 1–0 with a goal from Ryszard Jasiukiewicz in the 40th minute. The real excitement for us started after the match – because, as obvious “outsiders,” we were spotted by the locals. I remember that there were no physical altercations, although for a good while it looked like there might be.
Who could have guessed back then that Białystok would host the Polish Cup, the Polish Championship, and European cup competitions… and that the club would shed its image of a provincial rabble of football enthusiasts.
